Company History

VERBUND has been closely associated with the State of Austria for decades. Initially a strong "electrical engine" for the reconstruction of the country after World War II, VERBUND has, since Austria's accession to the European Union in 1995, developed into a company of European dimension.

Our company, founded on the basis of the 2nd Nationalisation Act, takes place during the time of the reconstruction.

Thanks to the Marshall Plan, important projects such as the Kaprun power plant can be implemented during the first years.

Austria's economy booms and within one decade electricity consumption has doubled.

Nuclear energy appears to offer a way out of the economic crisis; however, this is never implemented in Austria.

New coal fired and hydropower plants are built – until the Hainburg episode ushers in the end for large power plants.

Besides featuring the construction of the hydropower plant at Freudenau in Vienna, this decade is mainly characterised by preparations for Europe.

VERBUND expands in Europe and increases its activities in trading and participating interests.

The world economic crisis towards the end of the 2000s has also affected VERBUND: business is once again strongly focused on.
