Since 1999, VERBUND, in addition to its strong position in Austria, has been pursuing a dynamic growth strategy internationally.
Since the asset swap on 24 April 2013, VERBUND has been in possession of 21 hydropower plants with an annual generation of around 4 TWh in Germany, the company's second largest market after Austria. This corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of approx. 1.2 million households. The acquisition of five wind farms in summer 2012 in Rhineland Palatinate with a total of 86 MW has strengthened VERBUND's market position. Industrial costumers and redistributors like utilities are taken care of by two offices in Munich and Düsseldorf.
In France, VERBUND operates two combined cycle power plants. In Albania, VERBUND opened the first stage of the worldwide largest matrix turbine hydropower plant of Ashta with 53 MW in September. In Romania, the wind farm Casimcea I (99 MW) was commissioned in autumn 2012; further wind farms with more than 100 MW are in construction.
In Italy, VERBUND founded Sorgenia in 1999 with partner CIR, Italy's first private energy provider, and has a share of 45%. Meanwhile, Sorgenia is the fifth largest electricity provider of Italy and has generation capacities (hydropower, wind power, solar power and gas power platns) of 5,400 MW. Sorgenia provides more than 500,000 customers with electricity.
