VERBUND in Italy

In 1999, VERBUND and its local partner, CIR, founded Energia S.p.A (renamed as Sorgenia S.p.A. in 2006) as Italy’s first private energy supplier. The declared goal was to adopt a significant position in the fourth largest energy market in Europe. With success - Sorgenia managed to position itself as a reliable supplier of electricity and gas, meanwhile supplying more than 500,000 customers. VERBUND (directly and indirectly) disposes of more than 45.66% of the shares.

In Italy, environmental compatibility and economic efficiency are also at the forefront of the strategy described as "L’energia sensibile". In terms of CO₂ emissions, Sorgenia’s modern gas power plant facilities are setting standards in Italy. Sorgenia is also scoring in sales and distribution on account of intelligent systems to increase energy efficiency.

Important milestones in the expansion of the company’s production capacities to around 5,000 megawatts (MW) were the 2003 acquisition of shares in Tirreno Power, as well as the construction of own modern combined gas and steam power plants. The latest step was the commissioning of the 800 MW power plant of Aprilia in 2012.

Furthermore, Sorgenia is active in the development and expansion of capacities from renewable energy carriers. This strategy has made Sorgenia Italy’s fifth largest private electricity producer.
