On show were selected positions of contemporary art from the 1970’s right through until the present day under the aspect of performance, socio-critical tendencies and spatial, sculptural approaches. In line with SAMMLUNG VERBUND’s focus, the exhibition was structured according to the themes "Performance" and "Spaces/Places". "Performance" was concentrated on the little-known early works of Cindy Sherman, around which the feminist avant-garde was grouped in the form of Eleanor Antin, Hannah Wilke, Birgit Jürgenssen, Francesca Woodman and VALIE EXPORT.
In contrast to this was the central theme of "Spaces/Places with Fred Sandback’s sculptures, comprising fine filaments, and Ernesto Neto’s organically shaped, "nylonish", cage sculpture. Light boxes by Jeff Wall and photographs by Loan Nguyen accentuated the periphery and urban "non-places".
Works by Gordon Matta-Clark, Simon Starling, Gabriel Orozco and Teresa Hubbard/Alexander Birchler complemented the presented works. Furthermore, film, video and slide installations by Aida Ruilova, Markus Schinwald, Johanna Billing, Anthony McCall, Ursula Mayer, Janet Cardiff/George Bures Miller and Francis Alÿs were also shown.
To accompany the exhibition, a
compehensive catalogue was published by the Hatje Cantz publishing house.
