Success with hydropower
Hydropower represents VERBUND’s stable foundation. Low-carbon thermal power, as well as wind power, adds to the sustainable energy mix. The environmentally friendly and affordable generation of electricity forms the basis for economic success. In our capacity as Austria’s largest electricity producer, we cover more than 40 % of Austria’s electricity requirement. Hydropower is currently the only competitive renewable energy source for electricity production; in future we will also continue to primarily invest in its expansion.

The grid of VERBUND subsidiary Austrian Power Grid AG forms the stable backbone of Austrian power supply and safeguards the international electricity exchange: Around half of the electricity consumed in Austria is transported via this, the country’s largest and most powerful power grid. In order to ready it for growing demands, we are continuously investing in the grid infrastructure. The completion of the 380-kV Austria ring will safeguard the reliable supply of millions of people with electricity in the future.

An economic factor for Austria, know-how for the world
A major part of our economic performance flows back into society. VERBUND is majority owned by the Republic of Austria. Therefore, more than 400 million Euro are returned to benefit the Austrian people in the form of dividends, taxes and contributions alone. Moreover, VERBUND electricity creates jobs and strengthens the economy: We employ some 3,000 employees and open new markets with our infrastructure projects.

By way of example, the construction of Limberg II pumped storage power plant in Kaprun/Salzburg annually resulted in around 800 additional employees plus contracts for companies in the region. VERBUND is a recognised player on the international marketplace. With decades of experience in the planning and construction of hydropower plants, VERBUND has acquired an international reputation as a hydropower specialist. A fact that is appreciated by customers and partners around the globe.
