Thanks to technological progress and the economically favourable framework conditions, wind today counts among those renewable energy sources that are able to generate electricity at a low cost. Energy production through wind power has thus developed to a sustainable, market proven and competitive addition to conventional energy production.
Natural prerequisites
Many factors – such as, for instance, the choice of location – are essential for the successful construction and operation of wind power plants. The most important criterion when choosing the location, however, is the speed of wind. By means of detailed wind measurement data, the wind potential of a location can be assessed and production forecasts made.
Moreover, it has to be taken into account that the ground properties must be suitable for the construction of both wind power plant foundations and access roads. Surfaces in front of the wind generators should be free of obstacles such as buildings or trees so as not to slow down the wind speed. Environmental and landscape protection are also important criteria in the selection of an appropriate location.
