23.03.2001Wien

On yesterday’s International Water Day VERBUND-Austrian Hydro Power AG (AHP), Austria’s biggest electricity supplier, was awarded the NEPTUN-Water Prize 2001 in the area of "water technology".

The purpose of the prize, which is awarded by the Environment and Economics Ministry, the Austrian Gas & Water Association, and the Austrian Water- and Waste Management Association, is to promote the innovative utilization and careful use of water.

The matrix turbine at the Freudenau power plant, a EU-supported VERBUND-research project, was chosen as the most innovative project for utilizing lock water to generate power. A small turbine the size of a telephone booth is arranged in matrices of any numbers and utilizes water in locks, canals and irrigation channels to generate power. The Austrian innovation offers a new chance to generate energy worldwide, especially in developing countries.
