Arlberg power supply reconnected

11.11.2005Wien

The 380-kV power supply line traversing the Arlberg, interrupted on 23 August due to severe flooding, will again be put into operation today, Friday, 11 November. Thanks to this power supply line, run by VERBUND, Austria’s leading electricity company, Vorarlberg’s power grid is now again directly connected with Eastern Austria.

Due to the disastrous flooding during the month of August, severe damage was caused to the high voltage power grid connecting Vorarlberg and Tyrol, as well as numerous damages in the medium and low voltage area: numerous pylon bases were washed out, one pylon was in fact torn away by the masses of water flooding over the banks of the Alfenz River. Thus Vorarlberg’s direct power supply was cut off from the rest of Austria.

Thanks to the outstanding cooperation of companies Vorarlberger Illwerke AG, VERBUND Austrian Power Grid AG (APG) and the provincial authorities, the damage has now finally, within three months, been repaired.

The close power supply line connections between Vorarlberg and Germany and Vorarlberg and Switzerland respectively have been able to maintain the supra-regional power supply of Vorarlberg since 23 August. Which again proves the indispensability of VERBUND’s supra-regional power grid in emergency situations.
