Flooding Precautions: VERBUND Decreases its Backwater Areas on the Drau

Due to the precipitation forecasts, the backwater areas in Rosegg, Feistritz and Edling will be decreased by 2.5m.

Due to the current precipitation and discharge predictions for the coming days in Carinthia, VERBUND has commenced the draining of the large reservoir area today at midday at the Drau power plants in Rosegg, Feistritz and Edling (Völkermarkter reservoir). The water level will be lowered within the next 24 hours according to official regulations by a total of 2.5 metres. In this way disadvantageous effects on the local population can be avoided.

Following the current precipitation predictions for this afternoon, in the following days a total amount of water on the Drau will be expected, which according to the weir operating regulations will trigger a precautionary lowering of the large power plant backwater area by 2.5 metres. As operators of the Drau power plants, VERBUND has commenced the draining of the large reservoir area today at midday at the Drau power plants in Rosegg, Feistritz and Edling (Völkermarkter reservoir) according to the dam suspension regulations. This decrease in the water level should guarantee that negative impacts on the local community are avoided, in particular that in the town of Lavamünd.

VERBUND operates ten hydropower stations on the Carinthian river Drau, whose annual electricity production meets more than half of the total Carinthian electricity requirements.
