The dual vocational training at the Ybbs-Persenbeug site will become even more attractive in 2021 with the construction of the new building. VERBUND is investing more than 6 million euros in modern and energy-efficient accommodation for 40 apprentices and in training rooms in a new building by the Danube.

“We’re looking forward to further improving the positive learning environment at our power plant location in Ybbs with the modernisation of our infrastructure,” says Achim Kaspar, member of the Executive Board responsible for electricity generation at VERBUND. “In-house training in the fields of electrical engineering and metals technology is the sustainable pillar for our business. Decisive in this respect is the proximity to the power plant, the practical focus, as well as the contemporary accommodation. This is reflected in the architecture of the new building, which combines the proximity between workshop, lecture rooms and accommodation in a modern overall concept. The competition for the best next-generation specialists, above all for women in technology, requires us to make every effort to be an attractive employer. The Ybbs apprentice workshop is exemplary in this respect, with the first female master trainer at VERBUND. The recent decision to invest in the training workshop, especially in economically challenging times, shows commitment to the location and is an important step towards sustainable succession planning,” says Achim Kaspar.

“The success in apprentice training over recent years proves we’re on the right path, but is also a mandate for us to develop with the times. This includes innovative learning methods, modern machinery and attractive premises,” says Michael Amerer, managing director of VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH and apprenticeship officer at VERBUND.
“Operational challenges are increasing with every passing day. In order for our hydropower plants to be able to produce electricity safely and cleanly around the clock, we need power plant operators trained with an eye to the future, who in addition to conventional manual tasks also learn to identify and master the possibilities of digitisation from the very first day of training,” adds Karl Heinz Gruber, managing director of VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH.

New energy-efficient structure on the Danube

The new apprentice accommodation is being built by the Danube on VERBUND’s own land between the dredging harbour and the open-air switchgear. The new building is linked to the training workshop modernised in 2011 and offers lodging for 40 apprentices.
Spacious lecture halls can also be used for operational training and development activities. The plan focuses on functionality and energy efficiency: the location of the rooms, the accessibility of the workshops and short distances during training. Importance will be placed on excellent energy efficiency during construction. Following extensive planning, the foundation stone is scheduled to be laid in autumn 2021. Completion is currently planned for 2023.
