VERBUND offers electricity produced 100 percent from hydropower

10.10.2001Wien

VERBUND guarantees to its final customers TÜV-certified electricity produced 100 percent from hydropower – generation and sale are monitored by the Technical Control Board and an auditor. VERBUND wholesale customers are free to choose between electricity produced 100 percent from waterpower at a small extra charge and a mix product, a relatively high proportion of which is produced from waterpower, at an even more favourable rate.

Final customers who choose VERBUND as their power supplier can be absolutely sure that the power which Austria’s largest energy group feeds into the mains is 100 percent domestic hydroelectricity. VERBUND provides this guarantee for a total of nearly 16,000 GWh of TÜV-certified power produced by the VERBUND hydroelectric plants even in dry years. This premium product, generated 100 percent from waterpower, is offered to final customers via the VERBUND-Stromvertriebs GmbH. und Raiffeisen Ware Wasserkraft GmbH.

This important aspect was not taken into account in the list of power mix products offered by the Austrian power suppliers which was published by Greenpeace recently. It is important to point this out expressly to provide an unbiased survey of power products.

Offering this TÜV-certified clean power generated from regenerative waterpower VERBUND is in the vanguard of progress in terms of environmental friendliness and sustainability within the EU. This, in addition to cost-effectiveness, will be of benefit in the competitive race for markets and customers in Austria and abroad. As previously the production and sale of this hydroelectricity are to be monitored and certified by the Technical Control Board and an auditor.

In wholesaling VERBUND offers two product lines. Customers who are willing to accept an extra charge for clean energy are also free to choose the premium product generated 100 percent from eco-certified waterpower.

Other buyers who ask for power with a relatively high proportion of hydroelectricity at an even more cost-favourable rate can choose the VERBUND mix product, which is made up of the rest of VERBUND-made power and complementary purchases by VERBUND in Austria and abroad.

The official regulation on the make-up of this product is still pending. On the basis of the suggestions that are known at this point, a. o. by the Regulator E-Control, the mix will consist of approx. 45 percent of hydroelectricity, approx. 40 percent of thermoelectricity, and approx. 15 percent of power from nuclear production. Thus the VERBUND customers are free to choose whether they prefer electricity produced 100 percent from waterpower or the mix product.
