Cancelled: Reisseck Wadlbeisser cancelled for safety reasons
Rain, Snowfall and Ice Formation Along the Route
Today’s Reisseck "Wadlbeisser" (or "calf killer") – with 8,971 steps and 1,518 metres of altitude, Austria’s hardest step run - has had to be cancelled for safety reasons. Rain, snow and ice formation in the upper section of the route make a safe execution of the running event impossible.
In its capacity as organiser of the Reisseck Wadlbeisser, VERBUND took the decision to cancel the running event. Snowfall with ice formation has been added to the rain in the upper section of the route. Amid these general conditions, it is not possible to guarantee the safety of the approx. 80 registered runners.
In coordination with the local running calendar, attempts are now being made to find an alternative date towards the end of the 2013 running season. A short-term postponement of the Reisseck Wadlbeisser would lead to scheduling problems with other running events popular among the participants.
Destination Reisseck
Despite the weather, today sees the launch of the summer season 2013 on the Reisseck. With immediate effect, domestic and international visitors can again comfortably climb to an altitude of more than 2,200 metres by means of the Reisseck mountain railway. In 25 minutes, the Reisseck funicular railway negotiates a difference in elevation of 1,516 metres via an incline that reaches 82 percent at times. Once they have arrived at Schoberboden, visitors transfer to Europe’s highest private narrow-gauge railway, which culminates directly at Reisseck mountain restaurant.
Hiking and discovery
The popular Reisseck loop is the fitting destination for leisurely hikers. In approx. half an hour it leads to the Great Mühldorfer Dam at a height of 2,319 m. En-route, numerous interesting information points impart further knowledge about the landscape, geology and vegetation.
Great Mühldorf Lake offers many interesting destinations, such as the echo point and the seemingly ancient stone circle not far from the Great Mühldorf Dam. Riekenthörl (2,525 m), Hochkedl (2,558 m) and Grosse Reisseck (2,965 m) are further recommended hiking destinations. Climbers can try their hand at the "Bella Vista" climbing route on the Hohe Leier (2,774 m), which is extremely popular among mountaineers.
At the mountain station, visitors will find comprehensive information about the different levels of difficulty and walking times of the highlighted routes.
A glimpse into the interior of the Mühldorf Dam
Interested individuals, who wish to discover more about the production of electricity from hydropower, are invited to take a look inside the interior of the Mühldorf Dam. Experienced hiking guides accompany them up to the dam, point out and explain all that’s worth knowing about the production of electricity from hydropower, the natural environment of Reisseck, the construction of the reservoirs and the hiking and climbing opportunities all around. The guided tour lasts approx. 90 minutes and begins everyday at 10 a.m., midday, 1.30 p.m. and 3.00 p.m.
