Energy solution for Graz and the surrounding area

20.12.2016Vienna
The management of VERBUND AG, together with Energie Steiermark AG, today announced the upcoming settlement of all open issues regarding the district heating supply contract from the Mellach power plant location.
In this context, VERBUND will construct a heating boiler plant at the Mellach location, which will serve to fulfil the district heating supply contract. This will give VERBUND the opportunity to close down the Mellach coal-fired power station already before 2020, in accordance with its strategic orientation toward CO2-free power generation.

VERBUND Chairman of the Board Wolfgang Anzengruber: "With this upcoming settlement, VERBUND is achieving several strategic goals on the way to becoming a 100 % renewable electricity producer. Together, we have found a good solution for Graz and the surrounding area."
Energie Steiermark Board Spokesman Christian Purrer: "This current settlement will ensure a sustainable district heating supply for Graz, and in addition to our eco-projects in the area of solar thermal energy, biomass and waste heat, this cooperative solution will bring even more green heat into the households of the Styrian provincial capital."

For the gas-fired combined cycle power plant which is likewise located in Mellach, VERBUND is continuing to evaluate all options.

Both parties have agreed to maintain confidentiality about the further details of the settlement.
