First Bavarian hydropower plant of VERBUND equipped with electric filling station – further roll-out planned at the VERBUND power plants in Bavaria

VERBUND – Bavaria’s leading hydropower company with 22 powerful hydropower plants on the Inn and Danube – officially put a charging station for electric cars into operation at the Danube power plant Jochenstein on the evening of 12 July 2021. The District Administrator for Passau, Raimund Kneidinger, Untergriesbach’s First Mayor, Hermann Duschl, the managing director of VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH, Michael Amerer, and the new manager of the Jochenstein power plant, Andreas Auer switched on the new charging station together. Further e-filling stations at the Bavarian VERBUND hydropower plants are planned. The energy for the climate-friendly electromobility comes 100 percent from climate-friendly hydroelectricity.

In the presence of district administrator Kneidinger, mayor Duschl and Christina Schmidt from the “Haus am Strom”, VERBUND Hydro Power managing director, Michael Amerer, who is also CEO of Donaukraftwerk Jochenstein AG, charged an e-car at the new charging point for the very first time. The Danube power plant Jochenstein and the environmental station “Haus am Strom” are developing into a regenerative e-mobility centre with the new charging facility for electric and hybrid cars. After all, a publicly accessible charging point for e-bike cyclists has also been located here since 2011.

“The conversion to sustainable alternatives with green electricity as the drive energy is a stated goal of VERBUND for protecting the climate,” says Michael Amerer. “That’s why VERBUND has also be advancing the topic of electromobility for years, a fact that is evidenced by our European innovation projects. In the course of rolling out the cross-border charging infrastructure of electric vehicles, we have now also equipped the hydropower plant location at Jochenstein with a charging point,” says a delighted Amerer about the first Bavarian hydropower e-filling station, also mentioning that further power plant locations in Bavaria will be equipped with e-charging points for electric vehicles in the coming years: “As a pioneer on the subject of green electricity, we are making electromobility as clean as possible.”

“E-mobility does not live by announcements, but by action!” For Passau’s district administrator, Raimund Kneidinger, who is also the managing director of the Haus am Strom, this is a key statement, which he sees confirmed by initiatives such as the new e-filling station. Donaukraftwerk Jochenstein AG is thus making a direct contribution, and an important one for the region, to overcoming the central challenge of e-mobility: “We need not only the optimal technology to drive with. We also need the optimal infrastructure to enable it. Only this combination makes electromobility an attractive proposition.” With this charging point at the Danube power plant Jochenstein, this has been implemented with great impact and: “Where you can see directly where the electricity comes from!” says the district administrator.

“The market town of Untergriesbach is delighted that there is now another charging device for e-cars in Untergriesbach,” said a satisfied Hermann Duschl, mayor of Untergriesbach. “Alternative drives are becoming increasingly important for achieving the goal of reducing CO2 emissions. Electric vehicles are increasingly visible on our roads as well, for which a good charging infrastructure is absolutely essential. The new charging point is another offer in the respect and will hopefully be used by many local residents as well as by visitors to our market town. We are grateful that initiatives of companies are contributing to the improvement of the infrastructure here.”

Mobility transition is the order of the day
The future of mobility lies in the networking of non-motorised mobility, private transport, public transport, electric propulsion and the increased use of renewable energies. The mobility transition will bring with it networking and automation. The result will be a completely new townscape that reduces traffic jams and noise and takes ecological challenges into consideration. Not only will this require the further expansion of local and long-distance transport, but it must also be possible to transfer seamlessly between different forms of mobility which complement each other to the best possible degree for transport users through their smooth juxtaposition.

“With almost 100 percent electricity generation from renewable energies, VERBUND is helping design the future of e-mobility,” emphasised Amerer. Together with partners from research and industry, VERBUND is developing everyday infrastructure and concrete applications. “Our focus is on decarbonising the energy system through the sector coupling of energy and transport, which boosts the economic location and makes an important contribution to achieving the climate targets.”

The role of hydropower in a sustainable energy system
Electricity from hydropower has may functions in the energy system. Border power plant group manager Andreas Auer: “The run-of-river power plants on the border between Bavaria and Austria are in operation 24 hours a day and supply electricity to the Bavarian and Austrian grids. The border power plants generate electricity for over a million households in Bavaria. Hydropower is CO2-neutral, protects resources, reduces dependency on imported fossil fuels and thus makes a key contribution to the energy transition.”

Donaukraftwerk Jochenstein AG – a company of VERBUND
Donaukraftwerk Jochenstein AG (DKJ) was founded during the construction and operation of the Danube power plant Jochenstein with the purpose of using the section of border from Passau to Jochenstein for the use of energy. VERBUND AG (Austria) and Innwerk AG (Bavaria) are equal owners. Innwerk AG holds the German shares in the border power plant companies and has been fully owned by VERBUND since 2013. Investments and electricity generation are divided equally between Austria and Germany. Donaukraftwerk Jochenstein AG is sponsor of the “Riedl Energy Store” project – an essential project for supporting the energy transition.
