Green hydrogen as a game changer – shaping the energy future with VERBUND

VERBUND opts for green hydrogen. Precisely where direct electrification is not possible, green hydrogen is the key to achieving the ambitious climate targets. As a long-term decarbonisation partner, VERBUND implements local projects in collaboration with partners from various sectors and at the same time advances the establishment of a green hydrogen economy via import routes.

Local production of green hydrogen for partners

Together with local consumers from energy-intensive - so-called hard-to-abate - sectors such as steel and (petro-)chemicals, but also the mobility industry, VERBUND is developing green hydrogen projects. To this end, the experts of VERBUND rely on the know-how from power plant construction and power trading and are expanding the VERBUND portfolio with green hydrogen. On the basis of previously gathered experience in the operation of a 6 MW PEM demonstration plant (Proton Exchange Membrane electrolysis) with the industrial partner voestalpine in Linz and the pilot plant of a high-temperature electrolysis plant at the VERBUND power plant site in Mellach, tailor-made and cost-effective solutions are being developed for green hydrogen in order to achieve the decarbonisation targets.

Building up the green hydrogen economy through import routes

The ambitious European climate targets and the limited availability of domestic renewable energy source require us to focus on the local production of green hydrogen as well as on its import. Only in this way can ever greater demand be affordably covered in the long term, thereby also securing Austria as an economic location. Moreover, importing green hydrogen makes a decisive contribution to further reducing the country's dependency on fossil fuels. VERBUND is therefore expanding its value chain with international generation, as well as with the transport and marketing of green hydrogen.

"The long-term import of green hydrogen will require the establishment of international routes. Our analyses and conversations to date have shown that conditions for the production of green hydrogen are very good in northern Europe as well as in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region," adds Hamead Ahrary, head of Hydrogen at VERBUND. "The creation of the green hydrogen economy needs alliances – as a reliable decarbonisation partner, VERBUND is actively advancing this along the entire value chain.
