Aspern is not simply a large city development project; rather, with Aspern Smart City Research GmbH (ASCR), a joint venture was initiated between the City of Vienna, the municipal utility companies, and Siemens. With this joint venture valued at 40 million euros, Aspern stands out among dozens of other large-scale projects worldwide. A research plan containing the Domains Smart Grid, Smart Building, and Smart Information and Communications should make the city a test environment for the integration of technologies that promote energy efficiency and sustainable city development. The most important components are technologies for energy management in intelligent buildings, solutions for the low voltage grid - the power distribution system from transformers to the individual buildings and flats - as well as solutions for managing the enormous amounts of data, including the necessary infrastructure for information and communications technology. In contrast to almost all other large-scale city development projects, ASCR has set itself the objective that all elements of these systems, regardless of who produced them, should communicate optimally with one another so that they can exchange data and information.
