VERBUND Innkraftwerke is building a new bridge over the Inn Canal in Höchfelden, Töging am Inn. The steel arch bridge will replace the existing structure built in 1986. It will ensure greater safety, have a higher load-bearing capacity and provide significantly wider roadways and footpaths/cycle paths.
Töging town council and VERBUND agreed to build a new structure because renovating and raising the old bridge would not have resulted in the above-mentioned improvements.
The future “overhead supporting structure” will be made of steel and will allow the water rescue service to pass under the structure with clearance of 1.70 metres without having to raise the road ramps excessively. The future load-bearing capacity of the new bridge will be 60 tonnes instead of 30 tonnes, making it suitable for heavy goods traffic. “The supporting structure is being manufactured as a major component at the steelworks and will be fully assembled on the construction site. It will then be lifted into place in one piece using a crawler crane with a lifting capacity of 600 tonnes. This approach has already proved successful for two bridges in Waldkraiburg with an equivalent span,” explains plant group manager Tobias Heiserer.
The modern and architecturally ambitious steel design allows for targeted maintenance and repairs to be carried out, thus ensuring a sustainable service life. By building the new bridge, VERBUND is reinforcing traffic safety, improving cycling and pedestrian traffic and creating extra capacity for commercial traffic. VERBUND is investing 4 million EUR in the infrastructure for this purpose.
Preparatory work for constructing the new bridge starts at the beginning of December 2025 when the upper soil layer will be removed, which will be stored at the side and later recycled.
From 12 January 2026, work will begin on setting up the construction site and putting signage in place for the diversion. From 26 January 2026, the existing bridge will be completely closed to traffic, as will the riverbank paths that run along the Inn Canal in the construction site area. In the sections that are not completely closed, access will only be possible for residents.
The bridge is scheduled to be completed in August 2026. The construction works are expected to involve some local restrictions until the end of November 2026.
At Höchfeldener Straße, the bridge section will remain completely closed for the duration of the work and will serve as a construction site entrance. VERBUND Innkraftwerke apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks people for their understanding.
