New dynamic electricity tariff from VERBUND: flexibly reduce electricity costs and benefit from market price developments
VERBUND is now offering a dynamic electricity tariff based on the hourly market price of the European power exchange. Residential and commercial customers can actively cut costs by flexibly managing their electricity consumption and even receiving credit during certain hours.
The dynamic VERBUND electricity tariff, also known as the spot tariff, provides access to flexible electricity prices. It adjusts hourly to the current market price which is set on the EPEX SPOT power exchange for every hour of the day ahead. Prices vary according to supply and demand: prices often rise during times of high electricity demand, such as the morning or evening, and tend to fall in times of lower demand, such as during the night.
Benefit from negative electricity prices
A special feature of the dynamic rate is that the price on the power exchange can even fall below 0 at certain times. This means that when more electricity is available than is needed, such as on a sunny (Sun)day around noon, you may even receive credit for your electricity consumption. You can take advantage of these opportunities by timing the use of household appliances or charging an electric car during these cheaper hours. By doing so, you not only benefit from a sustainable electricity supply but also from targeted cost savings.
“The dynamic rate reflects price changes on the power exchange on an hourly basis, offering maximum transparency,” says VERBUND CEO Michael Strugl. “This enables customers to consciously control their consumption patterns, lower their energy costs, reduce the load on the power grid and participate directly in the sustainable future of energy.”
“Our dynamic rate is particularly aimed at technology-savvy and energy-conscious customers. It offers the opportunity to benefit from market price movements – in other words, to actually receive credit during certain hours,” explains Marco Vitula, Managing Director of VERBUND Energy4Customers.
The valid energy prices are set per hour every day no later than 2 p.m. for the following day and are published on the VERBUND website Dynamic Electricity Tariffs in Austria | Electricity at the power exchange price.
For example, May 2025 shows an average electricity price of 10.39 cents per kilowatt hour gross, with the possibility of falling into the low single-digit cent range around midday on sunny days of the electricity period. On 14 May 2025, there were even negative prices (-1 to -3 cents/kWh) between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Smart meter required
A smart and communicative electricity meter (smart meter) that measures quarter-hour consumption is the prerequisite for a dynamic tariff. The new tariff is not yet available in the network areas of Wiener Netze and Netz Burgenland, but the two states are expected to be added soon.
The right tariff for everyone
This dynamic rate is primarily aimed at customers who can manage their electricity consumption flexibly. The established fixed-price option remains available for anyone who wants fixed prices or cannot use their electrical appliances flexibly.
