VERBUND plans to build three wind turbines in the municipality of Burgschleinitz-Kühnring. During a civil dialogue event, the project operator provided information about the details of using wind power and the benefits for the community’s citizens. A public referendum will be held on 15 March.
The civil dialogue event on 10 February was part of the dialogue on using wind power, which has been ongoing since 2022. A broad range of communication options, including consultation hours, information materials and trips to existing wind farms have been used in the past. Details on the planned sites, the results of environmental surveys, and wind power measurements have now been presented. "After thorough investigations, it is now time to discuss the results and the benefits for the region," says Gustav Krempl, managing director of VERBUND Green Power AustriaGmbH.
"Wind power in Burgschleinitz-Kühnring offers opportunities for us as a community and for our citizens at several levels. We are at the forefront of actively advancing the transition to clean energy. If we generate energy in a climate-neutral way, it will be good for our conscience, the environment and our wallets. VERBUND has introduced a number of benefits such as civic involvement, climate savings and an attractive electricity tariff, which will benefit everyone," says Mayor Andreas Boigenfürst.
The project area is located in the WA109 zone designated by the State of Lower Austria. The wind measurements have shown pleasing results. Over several years, bird studies have shown that there is a safe distance to sensitive breeding areas. A compatible transport solution for the construction phase protects the settlement areas from excessive traffic caused by the construction site. Although the project does not meet the threshold for an environmental impact assessment, VERBUND will nevertheless voluntarily apply for such a procedure. "We see this as a signal of transparency and fairness towards our neighbours. We also expect this to provide the best possible legal certainty," says Gustav Krempl.
The question being voted on is: "Should the market town of Burgschleinitz-Kühnring dedicate space for three wind power plants in Wind Location Zone 109 between Zogelsdorf and Reinprechtspölla?" Postal voting cards can be applied for from now until 11 March, either at the town hall or online. "We hope, of course, for broad support, but above all, for a high turnout on this important issue for the future of the community," says Gustav Krempl.
