Necessary renovation work at the VERBUND headquarters in downtown Vienna
The headquarters of VERBUND, Austria's leading energy company, are located in Vienna’s city centre at Am Hof 6A. The office building was built in the 1950s and has housed the company headquarters since then, with the majority of the workforce in Vienna located there. The site is also home to the dispatching centre and a data centre, which plays a key role in ensuring the smooth flow and interconnectivity of the individual companies, thanks to its ideal location at the company headquarters. These facilities serve our core mission: the smooth energy supply of Austria.
Need for renovation due to legal requirements
There is an urgent need to renovate the building in order to comply with legal requirements for fire protection under the Vienna Building Code. In addition, directives on the resilience of critical facilities and the security of network and information systems (NIS-2) call for additional measures to improve physical security and earthquake safety. Age- and damage-related maintenance measures for building services are also required.
Energy efficiency, inclusion, New Work
During the planned renovation work, the building will also be thermally renovated, and structural accessibility will be implemented for improved inclusion. Thanks to further densification, more efficient use of space, and the introduction of desk sharing, job opportunities will be increased by around 30%. In the future, the building will provide around 1,000 employees with a suitable and multifunctional office environment.
Project planning
The building maintenance project is currently in the planning phase. The construction contracts are expected to be completed in mid-2027 under robust prices. The construction activities themselves are planned for the period from 2027 to 2029. During this time, the staff of the company headquarters will move to alternative accommodation.
From today’s vantage point, the necessary renovation work at the site is planned at a construction cost in the mid-tens of millions of euros. Developments on international energy markets and impacts on the construction sector and supply chains are a material factor.
