VERBUND X Ventures is investing in Greenpixie, a UK-based sustainable cloud computing startup
VERBUND X Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Austria’s leading energy company, announces its investment in the UK technology company Greenpixie, founded in 2021. With the rapid rise in cloud usage driven by digitalisation and AI applications, the energy consumption and carbon footprint of the underlying data centres are increasingly becoming a focus of large enterprises’ cost and sustainability strategies. This is where Greenpixie comes in—as a cloud efficiency solution for the energy transition. In addition to VERBUND X Ventures, investors Octopus Ventures; Armajaro, and Green Angel Ventures, are also participating in the £4.5m funding round.
Greenpixie: Transparency for a “green” cloud and AI infrastructure
Greenpixie’s core product adds a crucial layer of intelligence for decision making around cloud and AI infrastructure. While conventional tools primarily monitor costs, Greenpixie makes the impact of cloud resources on CO2 emissions, energy, and water consumption visible at the line-item level. This usage-based measurement technology (ISO 14064 verified) enables companies to precisely identify, reduce and avoid unnecessary cloud and AI consumption, with performance, cost and security benefits.
According to estimates, billions of dollars are wasted annually worldwide on unused cloud resources. Greenpixie positions itself not merely as a reporting tool, but as an enabler of cloud and AI efficiency.
“Cloud has become one of the largest and fastest-growing consumers of energy in the enterprise, and AI is accelerating that trend to unprecedented levels. As organisations make decisions around IT infrastructure, cloud migration, large-scale AI deployment, and beyond, they need data they can trust. Our purpose at Greenpixie is to provide that data, enabling our customers to make smarter business decisions while contributing to world's collective effort to manage our resources sustainably”, explains John Ridd, CEO, Greenpixie.
Growing market presence and strong partner ecosystem
Well-known global corporations such as Mastercard and Unilever are already relying on Greenpixie’s solution. A case study with Mastercard demonstrates the impact sustainability metrics can have in FinOps: the implementation of Greenpixie data generated savings in the millions within the first nine months.
A key competitive advantage is the seamless integration with established “cloud financial management tools” such as Flexera or Apptio (IBM). This partner approach gives Greenpixie access to a broad customer base and facilitates scaling through existing customer ecosystems.
For VERBUND, too, this development underscores the solution’s significant market potential. Michael Strugl, CEO of VERBUND AG, says: “Greenpixie addresses a structural customer problem in a high-growth market. The rapid validation among international customers and the savings achieved underscore the solution’s scaling potential.”
Strong international investor consortium bolsters Greenpixie’s scaling
In addition to VERBUND X Ventures, participants in the financing round include Green Angel Ventures, an investor specializing in climate technologies, as well as Armajaro and Octopus Ventures, two internationally active venture capital investors with a strong focus on high-growth technology companies. Together, the investors are supporting the further scaling of the Greenpixie platform. Franz Zöchbauer, Managing Director of VERBUND X, welcomes the collaboration with the co-investors: “The participation of investors such as Octopus Ventures, Green Angel Ventures, and Armajaro underscores Greenpixie’s international potential. Octopus Ventures, in particular, brings extensive experience in building globally successful technology companies. This strong consortium of investors will play a key role in further accelerating Greenpixie’s growth in international markets.”
