Messer Austria uses green electricity from VERBUND
Messer Austria, the leading supplier of industrial gases in Austria, has signed a pioneering long-term green electricity supply contract with VERBUND, Austria's leading energy company and one of the largest hydropower producers in Europe. This contract secures the sustainable supply of electricity to five production sites in Austria for six years and marks a significant step towards greening the sites.
For six delivery years, VERBUND will provide Messer Austria with regionally generated green electricity from existing domestic hydropower plants. The signed Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) supports Messer Austria in its strategy to increasingly cover energy requirements at its sites from renewable sources.
Energy transition is in the air
Messer is the world's largest privately owned industrial gases company and has specialised in industrial, medical and specialty gases for more than 125 years. Messer offers one of the broadest product portfolios on the market and develops application technologies for gases in state-of-the-art competence centres. "Sustainability is at the centre of our business activities. We play an important role in the energy transition by promoting innovative technologies and sustainable solutions. We are pursuing global targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by actively increasing the use of renewable energy both in our plants and in energy procurement," emphasises Michael Holy, Managing Director of Messer Austria.
Martin Wagner, Managing Director of VERBUND Energy4Business GmbH, is also optimistic about the conclusion of the contract: "The increasing demand for renewable energy is a clear trend and a necessity in order to make rapid and reliable progress in terms of energy efficiency and climate protection. Our green electricity solutions give energy-intensive companies in particular the opportunity to achieve their climate targets sustainably. We are proud that we are continuing our long-standing partnership with technology leader Messer Austria with the PPA and helping to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Together, we are taking an important step towards the energy transition."
