More than 95% of our electricity comes from Austria and Bavaria in the form of climate-friendly hydropower. This high proportion makes VERBUND a guarantor of clean energy – in Austria and its second most important sales market, Germany.
Hydropower for success
Generating electricity from water forms the basis of our sustainable success. We are currently the largest producer of hydroelectric power in Austria and Bavaria, and one ot the leading ones in Europe.
In the mid-1990s, VERBUND started implementing an environmental management system at its power plants, first at a number of pilot power plants, after which the EMS was gradually extended to all remaining locations. Since 2017, all hydropower plants of VERBUND have had an environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001, which is externally certified on a regular basis. Since 2014, all Austrian wind parks have also had an environmental management system.
Furthermore, all of the hydropower generated by VERBUND is certified by TÜV SÜD, which guarantees that the electricity comes 100% from hydropower. Our hydropower plants are highly efficient (pumped) storage power plants in the Austrian Alps and run-of-river power plants on all larger rivers in Austria. Since 2009, VERBUND has also been at home in Bavaria, where we now operate 21 power plants on the Inn and the Danube.
As a primary supplement to hydropower, VERBUND also generates green electricity from wind power. We currently operate six wind parks in Lower Austria and two in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. We also operate an onshore wind part on Romania’s Black Sea coast.
In addition, electricity and district heating are generated in the gas-fired combined power plant and district heating plant in Mellach, Styria. The entire thermal production is certified by TÜV SÜD with certificates of energy origin.
