Hikers at Mooserboden

Hiking & discovering

There are numerous hiking routes around the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs. The starting point is the Mooserboden at 2,040 metres above sea level. You can go for a gentle walk by the lake, set out on an extended mountain tour or simply enjoy the landscape of the high mountains in the Salzburger Land.

Safe hiking

The hiking area already ranks among the high alpine regions. So there are a few important rules you need to follow:

  • Wear sturdy shoes.
  • Always take some food along on your hikes and especially enough to drink.
  • Do not leave the marked hiking trails.
  • Keep an eye on the weather: in the high mountains, the weather can change very quickly.
  • Plan your route carefully in advance.

Herbal nature trail

The herbal nature trail leads from the Mooserboden reservoir to the rustic Fürthermoar Alm farm and inn. Along the path you can discover the unique flowers and plant life of the Upper Tauern mountains. The path repeatedly offers breathtaking views of the high mountain landscape with the Glockner Group, the reservoirs and the "Steinernes Meer" ("stone ocean").

With a walking time of 45 minutes (one direction) and an altitude difference of 237 metres, the herbal nature trail is also very suitable for families. However, good, non-slip shoes are necessary.

Your hike begins at  Bergrestaurant Mooserboden and is well marked all the way. From the Fürthermoar Alm farm and inn you have the option of returning by bus to the valley or to the Mooserboden. Of course it is also possible to hike in the opposite direction.

Children’s learning trail

STROMI’S nature and technology trail invites you and your children to go on an easy hike along the Mooserboden reservoir. Accompanied by our little mascot STROMI, guests of every age playfully learn more about nature, technology and hydropower at six experience stations. The length (approx. 1 km, walking time approx. 30 minutes incl. stations) and surface of the children’s learning trail also makes its suitable for the very youngest children and can be used by buggies and pushchairs without any problem.

The children are given an accompanying booklet to the children’s trail at the ticket office. A question has to be answered at each station. If all questions are answered correctly, the right solution word will result in a small surprise being handed out at the kiosk in the Electricity Adventure World.

Höhenburg climbing arena

Mooser-Mandl, Drossen-Hex and Limberg-Zwerg: Three via ferrata routes with varying levels of difficulty have been installed in the rock of the history-steeped Höhenburg. The "Limberg-Zwerg" climbing route even integrates the well-preserved iron ladder of the former mountaineering school. Along this simple fixed-rope route, the key section "Zwergenleiter" ("dwarf ladder") with a difficulty level of C is waiting to be overcome.

All three routes end at the summit of the Höhenburg, which towers up between the Drossen and Mooser dams. Every climber should be sure to have a camera along, because the climbing routes in the high alpine environment with the high mountain reservoirs in the background are a unique setting for athletes and recreation seekers alike. The descent back to the dam follows the comfortable Höhenburg hiking trail.

Via ferrata MOBO107 on the dam

The MOBO107 is the world's highest fixed climbing route directly on a dam. By means of a little flying fox you get to the start of the via ferrata on the dam. After a fixed ladder, steel ropes and footholds, a rope bridge is waiting at the end of the climb. For a little rest, the viewing platform "Stoabergblick" is available partway through the climbing route. The most challenging part of the via ferrata is the so-called "swing," which however can also be bypassed. The via ferrata on the dam has a difficulty level of A to B with a C variant (swing). The climbing route can be used daily during the opening hours, upon request also with the guidance of a certified mountain guide.
