The Losenstein run-of-river power plant was built between 1958 and 1962 and required the most extensive construction measures in the storage area of any power plant on the Enns, second only to the Großraming power plant. From 1972, Losenstein was operated remotely from Großraming; the control centre in Steyr has managed operations since 2000. Two Kaplan turbines generate an annual average of around 170 GWh of electricity.

Ecology & environmental protection

A fish bypass for the Großraming site is currently being evaluated. A feasibility study of ecological measures (German only) on the Enns was carried out in 2017 by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (commissioned by: Office of the Provincial Government of Upper Austria, Office of the Provincial Government of Styria, Ennskraftwerke AG and VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH).
Responsible treatment of the environment
Powerhouse: Located in the powerhouse are two five-blade Kaplan turbines with vertical shaft. Their nominal output is 16,677 kW each. They are coupled with two 20,000 kVA three-phase synchronous generators. The ring cooling installed in the generators blows the warm air through nine externally arranged upright windows. In winter, the hot air produced by the generators can be used to heat the machine hall.

Transformers: The main transformers T1 and T2 have a nominal output of 20,000 kVA and a nominal voltage of 6.3/120 kV.

Weir system: Each weir field has a double hook gate comprising a base gate and a top gate, and is powered by two chain winches. Seven weir dam beams are provided to close each weir opening on the upstream side.
