Talbach Run-of-River Power Plant

VERBUND's power plant of Talbach is a run-of-river plant situated on the river Talbach (near the river Enns) and in the municipality of Schladming in Styria.

Construction commenced in 1897, but its power had to be increased to 59 kW in 1903 due to the large demand for electricity. In 1925/26, a new Francis turbine was installed and the generator converted from direct current to alternating current. This turbine is still in operation today and was given a new impeller in 2007 during a winter overhaul. The power plant generates around 3 GWh of electricity annually.

Ecology & environmental protection

A fish bypass will not be implemented at the VERBUND power plant Talbach, as this would not be of any added ecological value.

The entire plant group of the Styrian hydropower plants has been awarded the environmental certificate ISO 14001. The power plants on the rivers Mur and Enns not only fulfil the statutory requirements but also focus on high environmental standards and technical innovations. The goal is the efficient use of hydropower and the balance between economy and ecology. The effectiveness and benefit of the environmental management system are mainly the responsibility of our employees, who undergo constant training and development in this area.

Wherever ecologically valuable and technically feasible, VERBUND has set itself the goal of guaranteeing the continuity of flow for domestic fish and aquatic life at the locations of its hydropower plants. By 2025, VERBUND will invest 280 million euros on the implementation of fish bypasses and other ecological structural measures

Our latest conservation projects
Turbines and generators: The Francis turbines are coupled with three-phase synchronous generators via a horizontal shaft. Machine 1 has a turbine with a flow rate of 800 l/sec. The generator, which was refurbished in 1998, has a rated output of 315 kVA at 1,000 revolutions per minute. Machine 2 has a turbine with a nominal flow rate of 640 l/sec.; its impeller was refurbished in 2006. The 180 kVA generator was reconditioned in 1999. Machine 3 has a turbine with a nominal flow rate of 680 l/sec.; its impeller was reconditioned in 2007. The generator with a rated output of 160 kVA was installed in 2000. At the same time as the replacement of the generators, the turbine regulator and controllers were upgraded to the current state of the art.

Transformers: A machine transformer converts the generated energy from 400 V to 6.3 kV.

Weir system: Two base gates and an inlet gate enable the water flow to be controlled in the inlet area of the weir system. The gates are raised and lowered by remote control via electric motors.
