History of the Power Plant

The Schwarzach, the Wallnerau-Salzach and the Wallnerau-Unterwasser power plants make up a unique combination of three power plants coexisting in a very small area and are almost like a lower grade of the Kaprun storage power plant.

The Schwarzach power plant is a medium-pressure diversion power plant with a daily storage reservoir. It utilizes the gradient of the Salzach between the Högmoos weir system at Taxenbach and Schwarzach and comprises: a three field weir system, the roughly 17 km long concrete covered works water tunnels, the Brandstatt equalizing basin and a roughly 0.9km long armoured pressure shaft as well as the Schwarzach powerhouse with the 110 kV outdoor substation.

Högmoos Weir System

The Högmoos weir system is made up of three weir fields, where 100-year flooding of 600 m3/s can be discharged via two weir fields. Each weir field seals off a segment gate with a flap gate positioned on top. The water flows from the inflow structure through the intake trash rack over a multi-chambered sedimentation basin facility to a regulating guard, with which the rate of flow in the backwater area can be kept to a height of 738 m. Subsequently, the water is channelled into the 17km long concrete-covered works water tunnels via a slope pipeline before the regulating guard.

Brandstatt Equalisation Basin

This daily storage reservoir with a net capacity of around 1.8 million m3 makes it possible to extensively adapt the utilization of the power plant to peak-time requirements. The management of the reservoir is, however, above all dependent on the channel flow of the Salzach at the weir system.
