Mayrhofen Pumped Storage Power Plant

Mayrhofen is located in the Zillertal Valley in Tyrol, in the municipality of Mayrhofen.

The power plant was commissioned in 1970 and extensively modernised in 2015. Turbine and generator parts were renewed and state-of-the-art automation technology added. Additional generation capacity of approx. 20 million kilowatt hours of green electricity per year was achieved for the region.

The Roßhag and Häusling pumped storage power plants and the Mayrhofen storage power plant form the Zemm-Ziller power plant group – one of Austria’s most powerful power plant groups. The Mayrhofen storage power plant lies at the heart of this.

Ecology & environmental protection

Sustainable Rivermanagement is a project under the scientific direction of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences and e3 consult, which VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH co-financed as one of the consortium partners.
Achieving the environmental targets of the EU Water Framework Directive is just as essential for the national climate targets as for the implementation of the EU’s energy and climate packages. Over many years of cooperation between science, power generation and the authorities, the understanding between the interest groups has been deepened and meaningful, efficient solutions for the implementation discussed. A method has been developed to compare the ecological effects or the ecological improvement potential of individual surge-absorbing measures with the corresponding system-relevant as well as economic and business effects. Further information about the project can be found here.

Technical description

The Mayrhofen powerhouse has 6 sets of machinery with horizontal shafts and a total bottleneck capacity of 355,000 kW. One machine set consists of a generator and a 2-nozzle double Pelton turbine. The electricity generated is conducted via a 220 kV cable to the Mayrhofen open-air switchgear.

The Stillupp reservoir has a capacity of 6.6 million m3 and a final level at 1,120 metres above sea level. The Eberlaste dam with a crown length of 480 metres was erected as the closing structure.
