Salza Storage Power Plant

VERBUND's Salza power plant is a storage power plant and situated in the municipality of St. Martin am Grimming in Styria.

The storage power plant was built between 1947 and 1949. The around 6 kilometre-long Salza reservoir nestles harmoniously in the narrow gorge of the Salza near Mitterndorf. The power house was built on the bank of the Salza, around 0.5 kilometres below the Salza dam. In the power house, a Francis spiral turbine generates electricity entirely from hydropower, with which it can supply almost 6,000 households in the surrounding area with environmentally friendly electricity.

Ecology & environmental protection

The entire plant group of the Styrian hydropower plants has been awarded the environmental certificate ISO 14001. The power plants on the rivers Mur and Enns not only fulfil the statutory requirements but also focus on high environmental standards and technical innovations. The goal is the efficient use of hydropower and the balance between economy and ecology. The effectiveness and benefit of the environmental management system are mainly the responsibility of our employees, who undergo constant training and development in this area.

Wherever ecologically valuable and technically feasible, VERBUND has set itself the goal of guaranteeing the continuity of flow for domestic fish and aquatic life at the locations of its hydropower plants. By 2025, VERBUND will invest 280 million euros on the implementation of fish bypasses and other ecological structural measures.
 
Our latest conservation projects
Turbines and generators: The power plant’s Francis spiral turbine has an impeller diameter of 1.45 metres. At a nominal flow rate of 8.6 m³/sec., it achieves a power output of 8,500 kW. The coupled 8,000 kVA three-phase synchronous generator works on a grid voltage of 6.3 kV. In winter, the waste heat of the generator is used to heat the machine hall; in summer, it is discharged to the outside via ventilation dampers in the window parapets.

Transformers: In order to raise the generated electrical energy to 30 kV, the plant has an 8,000 kVA machine transformer. The electricity is conducted away to Öblarn and Trautenfels via two 30 kV branches into the regional supply grid of STEWEAG. The plant has a 200 kVA transformer for its own requirements.
