That’s me – That’s not me

Contrary to the generally held view, it is not the famous Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) that form the start of Cindy Sherman’s artistic development but, among other things, the 50 extraordinary and lesser known works from the holdings of the VERBUND COLLECTION. In the dynamic environment of the Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, Sherman learns about conceptual and performative forms of expression and rapidly integrates these into her art. The specifics of her early work are the presentation of the process of transformation, the use of different media ranging from photography to film and performance, and her method of telling complex image stories with cut-out figures. At this time, the artist was exploring how it feels to slip into a different role and to move away from oneself.
