Technical Description

The Aschach power plant was built between 1959 and 1964 and was the second Austrian Danube power plant to be built, between Sauwald and Mühlviertel. The power plant dams up the Danube 14.9 m high and also has the highest drop height of all Austrian power plants on the Danube. From 2006 to 2010, after 40 years in operation, it took only 4 years to renovate the main engine in the power plant. In the powerhouse, which is located in the middle of the power plant between the lockage (on the right bank) and the weir system (on the left bank), there are 4 machine units with vertical shafts, each made up of 1 Kaplan turbine and a built-in three-phase current generator. There is an average annual output of 1686 GWh of generated electricity.

Numerous structuring measures were undertaken in the Aschach storage area from 2007 to 2014: Fine sediment biotopes were protected against wave impact by gravel banks, shingle banks were improved to create gravel zones, and 10 short groynes were create to make the shoreline more diverse. Doing so enabled the creation of further habitats for fish and other forms of aquatic life.

The Aschach power plant will be equipped with a fish pass by 2027 as part of the project LIFE Blue Belt Danube Inn.
